Well, a full week has gone by, so I suppose it's time to update you on the hipster conversion process.
First of all, Diego insisted that I put a disclaimer on here:
No hipsters were harmed for the creation of this blog series.
Our intention here is to amuse, explore and inform, not harm.
Next, there are some subsets of the hip that should be defined. I think it is most appropriately illustrated via graphic tee:
|
Note the stylistic differences between the various subgenres of "hip" |
We explored some hipster options and came up with a slow, piece by piece process. NO I won't have a spoiler alert, but I'll show you some of the hipster activity Diego has been up to...
|
A hip + hipster blend: ironic (hipster) tee + aviator (hip) glasses.
Sort of like a cotton/poly blend: innovative but slightly off. |

Step One: Pabst Blue Ribbon. Or PBR as a hipster would say. |
|
Step Two: PBR + cutoff jean shorts. |
Some contention here: a Mexican hipster would probably drink Budweiser. We had some of that too, but in order to initiate the hipster process, we started with PBR... The logic is that if he can be a general hipster, the Mexican aspect will just naturally follow. Also note that the pictures are progressively more aged...

Step Three:
Ironic tee (hipster + Mexican) and trucker style hat that doesn't match shirt. |

We have a few other steps in mind, so stay tuned!
And now for a quick discussion on how Tom Waits is a hipster icon:
First of all, note his large tattoo, although it doesn't quite cover his whole arm. Also, there is a
Facebook group dedicated to those who liked Waits before he was a hipster icon. Which is really full of scenesters. Of course, real scenesters probably don't use Facebook anymore, now that everyone else likes it. His music is also obscure, and he never became a sell-out, two huge items for hipsters. Jesse did not believe me that Tom Waits is hipster music. But a quick Google search says otherwise, and backs me up entirely. As I am fairly ignorant in terms of TW, I have this article about
two hipsters arguing about which versions of TW are most appropriately vintage.
So, to the hipster curious, and particularly the Mexican hipster curious, I close this process update and pose to you the question: what is an example of Mexican hipster music?
I see Mexican hipsters all days of my life in Mexico City.
